As we know I'm having issues with the rr4 electrics. I've now lost everything on the clocks along with all ignition. What I have found is a possible earth through the starter. I've done the continuity test for the earths and don't get above .7 ohms at any point on the chassis (1 probe on the battery neg terminal wire and the other probe at about 15 different places around the body and engine) I think this is a decent indicator?? With the multimeter set to the 20v range I can probe the starter relay terminals.....there's no continuity but there are 12.93v across the two. I'm wandering if the starter is actually meant to give me an earth?. If the 3 wired plug is attached to the relay could the starter be creating a circuit hence the power spikes , heat and melting plastic. Please help guys I'm missing the sun!
I think you need to get someone who knows what they are doing and who can follow the wiring diagram. You comments above suggest you don't have a clue - sorry to be blunt - so before you do permanent damage get some help. HTH
While I agree I don't have a clue and yes it really needs someone who knows better I'm a little stuck. I have no way to move the bike and no network of specialists anywhere close as I live right out in the sticks.the people I've contacted don't seem to have too much interest so I'm kind of stuck really. I've learnt over the many years to have to do things myself and mostly succeed. If it goes majorly wrong the bike will be broken or sold on as a project but thanks for your input. As with all comments every one is highly valued as I understand you give up your time to try and help out.
OK, so going back to you comments, the starter motor should only get 12v when the starter button is pressed = and even then would be stopped with the sidestand down/clutch/bank angle sensor. So worth checking that relay and the starter switch.

Thanks.I've discovered so far that There's no problems with the earthing of chassis and engine. All blocks and terminals seem to have good uncorroded connections. There's no problem with the starter button/relay as there's no continuity across the relay terminals and no power from the switch until pushed(back probing the terminals) There's only a draw when the 3 wired multiply is connected to the relay. It's enough to melt the 30 amp fuse but not blow it. With the starter motor power cable disconnected at the relay and the the pos multimeter probe on the pos side of the battery I'm getting 12v when probing the starter cable. I'm presuming there shouldn't be an earth through the starter. It seems that its creating a circuit when the 3 wired relay plug is connected regardless of whether the ignition is on or off
That does not sound good, can you get a new relay? Is it the right one? Could someone have put the wrong one in there?
Although a little melted the relay is doing its job by only operating once energised from the starter button but i do have a new one to fit once ive figured the problem out. Im thinking the starter may have shorted to ground and is somehow creating a circuit that is continuously pulling power through the 3 wired connector on the relay Thus over heating the smaller cabling and melting things. Ive cleaned all plugs /terminals and earths and dont have a resistance above .7 ohms. At the moment im trying to figure if the syarter should have a ground through the power that originates at the relay.
No, the ground will be by virtue of it being bolted to the engine. And it should onge vet power when you press the starter with the ignition on.
I think we are crossing wires ( excuse the pun) The pos starter cable that runs from the relay is now detached. If I probe the multimeter or test light from the pos battery terminal to the Now detached starter cable this bypassing the relay entirely I'm getting 12.9 v or illuminating the test light..It seems that the starter cable/motor is giving me an earth which is completing a circuit. I thought although bolted to the chassis the starter should have insulated connections that would prevent the earthing effect I'm witnessing. I have a 20 sec clip but I'm unable to upload it
I think you need to test the other way round - the starter motor will have a very low resistance and give the results you are experiencing. It certainly will not be isolated - do you see a separate earth connection to it? Basic Ohms Law, your voltage is fixed, you need lots of current to go through the starter motor, so resistance is very low. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=o...WYgBiQSSAQE4mAEAoAEBwAEB&sclient=gws-wiz-serp Have a look at the diagram another kindly chap provided in one of your other threads.
Will do thanks. No theres no other earth connections to the body of the starter that i can see. Il be honest,im getting to the point of breaking it at the moment as its becoming just a little bit tiresome. Thanks again for the input
So go on then, where abouts in the country are you, I for one would pop round for the odd cippa if not so far away, maybe others on here would too?
Can’t add anything useful but just want to say good luck in getting this sorted - you’ll have a great bike once done! And can I put in a request for pics of the bike?
Im trying to upload the few clips i have before it ended up in bits but its not loking my files for some reason. Im not in such a massive rush anymore so may persevere with the fix but il let u all know. Im at the furthest part of west wales. Pembroke. if any one is up for it il happily have a cuppa and chin wag. Thanks gents
I don’t think you can upload videos on here, only pictures You would have to upload to YouTube and then put a link to YouTube If you picture files are to big email them to yourself and shrink them, then post
