Simplest cheapest way to lean my fuel mixture?

    My 2004 CBR1000RR makes really intense smelling petrol fumes. The fumes smell strongly of unburned petrol.

    Fumes details
    After riding the bike my clothes always stink of petrol fumes. As does my hair etc. Generally I feel best if I change my clothes and shower after riding the bike. Its quite bad.
    My girlfriend also says its really bad. She said she smells the fumes 85% of the time we're riding (even while moving) and the smell is especially intense for her when I go full throttle.
    I don't notice the fumes while moving. Only when idling at a traffic light.

    Current equipment
    She's got a scorch underseat exhaust that protrudws about 2" past the end of the tidy tail. The prev owner told me the butterfly valve has been permanently bypassed.

    Extending exhaust further

    Extending the exhaust further would probably look weird. I once added a few inches of sheet aluminium to the exhaust on my VFR400 because it had the same unburned petrol smell problem. It helped on that bike. But ultimately I want to address the fuel mizture which will be the most effective and won't make the bike look ugly.

    Temperature implications of leaning the mix
    The bike normally runs at 79-82c. I've never seen it go over 87c even on hot summer days. I ride on street only and I'm probably moderately conservative. I'm not redlining the bike much. I don't care if I lose some power leaning the mix and if the bike will run hotter, like 95c or whatever. The radiators have fans on them with a switch. But I've never needed to use them.

    What's the simplest cheapest way to do it?
    Bazzaz? Power commander? Something else?

    I am self taught in electronics engineering and I write software for computers and microcontrollers etc so I'm very at home with modifying electronics and programming stuff.

    I imagine it being fairly plug and play but I've got no experience with fuel mods.

    Is there a risk of me overheating parts of the engine by going too lean even if the temperature looks fine?

    Can I install it myself and connect my laptop and just try lean the mix by 5% or whatever then see how that affects the smell and the running temp? Then if the temp is good and ot still stinks I can go a bit further? Can I avoid it being an expensive mod? (avoid taking it to a dyno tuner?)

    I don't need perfection. I just don't want it to smell anymore without sacrificing engine health.

    Switchable maps?
    If there's going to be a significant power loss from leaning the bike and it won't cost much more it would be nice to have buttons to select different maps based on need. I would likely run the lean map most of the time though. Maybe I would just switch to the rich map if its a really hot day or I want max power for whatever reason.

    Bazzaz its an excellent kit it will do all the mapping and more.

    Extending the exhaust is just daft,

    your bike might have an underlying problem tho if it stinks that bad. Are all your fuel lines ect in good repair? are you sure you dont have any injector problems where fuel is getting past he injectors and leaking all over the top of the engine? things like vent pipes as well on the tank could be off or pouring fuel out.

    My bet is that there is something wrong fuel area wise you just shouldn't smell off fuel let alone smell it while riding I hope no one smokes arround you after you have been out on the bike :D

    Hey @Carlo thanks for the info.

    There probably isn't a leak.
    When the engine is off and bike has been standing, there is a very subtle fuel smell.

    When I turn on the key (but before I start) and the fuel pump turns on there is no significant fuel smell.

    Once I start the engine there is a strong fuel smell. So its fairly clear its coming out of the exhaust. Because if I sit on the bike while it idles with a head wind I don't smell it. But if there is a tail wind or no wind I smell it strongly.

    I could attach 5 meters of pool pipe to the exhaust to be really sure. But I'm not sure that's very healthy to have swimming pool water going thru that pipe afterwards :)

    Its possible that my bike has an uprated fuel pump or injectors.
    The prev owner gave my a dyno chart and he said the bike is making 10-20hp more than stock.

    At the end of the day I'd like the exhaust to smell more like an efficient car than a spitting racebike, so its going to need some leaning anyway.

    I'll check out the Bazaz kit :) Is there any particular model you recommend?

    You obviously have a problem with the bike. Take it to a garage/dealer and have it fixed you stingy git.

    The only way to tell if your bike is running rich or lean is by dynoing it. Guessing or smelling won't lead you anywhere close esp for fuel smell.

    have a look at the tank ventlitation tube to start with, blow compress air from tank end and see if its blocked, then airbox and pair valve tubes for leak and exhaust and so on. The stock mapping with aftermarket exhaust will most likely make the bike a bit leaner than stock can...
