Planning a 3 day tour of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. Anyone recommend any roads around there? Places to stay, stop, and eat also welcome
You gotta visit St. Ives in Cornwall. IIRC Thursday night is bike night there too. We go there every year on holiday and I went down on the bike a couple of years back for the weekend with my mate. Was a long trip, and we only had a overnight stay before coming back but it was something we wanted to do. The coast roads around there are pretty good and south from St. Ives on the coast road all the way down to Land's End is worth doing. We stayed in a B&B in Halye (just outside St. Ives) and got the bus in to St. Ives in the evening. The Sloop Inn is a great old fashioned fishermans pub with a great atmosphere. There are B&Bs in St. Ives but they are busy and expensive. As for other roads around there, the roads down to the Lizard are also good. Mousehole and Sennen are worth a visit too.
Devon& Somerset some lovely roads but Cornwall many of there roads are not great for a fast paces run. unless your just taking in the sights. A must in to come off at bridgewater and head towards minehead and Llfracombe on the A39. great roads and idea for bikes. If I was heading south I would take that route
The 396 is frequented by pheasants, mind, so be careful. One particularly misty sunday morning, me and a mate got from Tiverton to Tarr Steps along that road without seeing another vehicle.
dunster to tiverton is a must av 90 no cars on it fast flowing one of the best in the south west and not that well known shhhhhhh
Without doubt my favourite 'I hate my life, I need to blow off steam' road. Except for all the kamikaze pheasants...
Did that road as part of the tour, it was absolutley arseholing it down the whole way along it though so the average speed was a bit less than 90
RE Dunster to Tiverton average 90mph I'd have to see that to believe it !! The road to Minehead is double whites for 90% of the way , lovely road best done very early in the morning when theres not to many cars around otherwise your stuck doing 35-40 mph and end up taking crazy risks to get past, and be aware of Red Deer jumping out at you as you pass the foothills of the Quantocks if you don't turn off for the Dunster Tiverton road, you can carry on through Porlock,Lynton,Lynmouth through to Ilfracombe very picturesque some great scenery along with lovely twisty and steep roads, just be aware of the free roaming sheep. If you do go down the Dunster/Tiverton road take a right at the Black Cat junction this will eventually lead you over to Ilfracombe, there is a section of sweeping lefts and rights that lasts for about 1.5 - 1.75 miles that'll bring a huge smile to your face
A mate and I did it one foggy, drizzly Sunday morning and turned off to Tarr Steps. If we came across half a dozen cars I'd be surprised. I did it coming home from Minehead one Saturday morning in my 205 GTi and had to massage the grin off my face. On the down side I once got diverted down it after an incident on the north Devon link road along with all the other traffic. 25 to 30 all the way. Never heard the Blade's fan running as much as that day.
