A mate of mine just returned from the Alps and his wallet took a battering. He is a mature rider, two up on a Z1000SX, but knows how to ride but is no hooligan. He was caught on a mountain pass in a 50mph zone doing 72mph between some hairpins, he did not see the speed gun and was stopped a short distance later. Apparently the fine is based on your abillity to pay so they want to know your income and value of any assetts etc, is this legal ?? Anyway even being economical with the truth and he is not rich by any means his fine was over £700....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ouch. Has anyone had this, is this normal ??
Ouch, I was in Switzerland this year and was defiantly doing a bit more than 50 inbetween some hairpins looks like I was lucky
No help now, but if i'm ever in that situation, then im a mature student, who is £50,000 in debt, renting a 1 bed council flat on a water & coin gas meter. Oh and the bike's borrowed. My reckoning is that they'll owe me about £500.
Yup it's very much true, i lived in switzerland for 6 years & paid some heavy fines for minor speeding offenses. The best one was somewhere around $400 for going a few km/h over the limit. This was with an undercover cop car sneakily parked in a street like any other car. You drive by, there's a flash & a week later the fine is in your mail box. I calculated that over the years i paid well over three times my car's price in fines alone! If you get caught going really fast you even lose your license for a year or two.
I went through Switzerland last year on my old Blade and was blissfully unaware of all this, and the roads were bussier than the Pyrenees/Picos so I shall be avoiding that place in the future and take the ferry south, if the strike is reolved.......
I was doing 530 mph through Switzerland a couple of weeks ago. Nobody batted an eye at it. Except air traffic control.
But what was the speed limit ???? lol Some one found this on another site, gives a breakdown of costs English Forum Switzerland - View Single Post - How do speeding fines work in Switzerland?
Not certain Bart, but I'll wager more than one gnome was looking up thinking "Ve should be able to make a few bob out of zem schweinhundes up zere".
The speeding fines can also vary depending on which part/canton you're in, german/italian/french. Some areas are more tolerant than others. Also reminds me of a funny story, once we were driving back to my place in two different cars & we decided to have a race to see who gets home first. Well i beat my friend to the apartment, going waaay too fast in a residential area (it was late at night, streets were empty). Soon as i pull into my spot a cop car pulls over right in front of me. Now i knew that i was probably going to lose my license & face a heavy fine. Well they came up to me asked me how fast i was going & i said dunno pretty fast i guess? They asked me for my registration, so i reach for the glove-box & soon as i pop it open, right there is a bag of weed left by my friend which i'd totally forgotten about! Long story short, the cops totally forgot about the speeding & i just got a minor fine for possession (they're pretty chill over there when it comes to marijuana).
