I have had to change my plans for next years trip (was going to be Spain) but due to time issue's, now looking to go to Germany. I have just been reading December's issue of Ride magazine and they have a feature about The Harz in Germany, they state that its 'Germany's best kept riding secret (until now) ' anyone know of it ?
Used to go skiing in the Harz Mountains back in the mid to late 80s. Apart from the skiing all I can remember was that it pretty close to the old Inner German Border, and lots of rumours about secret tunnels etc. Stretching some of the old grey matter I seem to recall that some of the roads were pretty twisty and through woods, but that's not unexpected with mountains is it.
Mate looking to move there, he reckons it's next big bike area for tourists, so much closer than alps, food and beer good. Roads ace condition. There are a couple of UK biker friendly hotels there. It's just hitting weather right.
Great area for walking, mountain biking, and touring on 2 or 4 wheels. Its the northern version of the Schwarzwald on the cheap. We are there next year for 2 weeks touring.
