I found this paragraph regarding exhausts on the internet - 'The new MOT legislation requires that the vehicle tester is able to see the standard (original makers stamp) or aftermarket exhaust fitted to the bike is marked with the obligitory BSAU 193a and the European "E" mark. If your Exhaust can does not carry these markings, it could lead to a failed MOT and if you are stopped by the Police it can lead to a fine and points on your licence.' As I am looking to get a new exhaust I wondered if this is the current law on exhausts ? I was thinking of a Yoshi RS5 system, but as it does not carry an 'e' mark or BSAU 193a would it be liable to not passing an MOT and/or penalty by police ? I know it is does not have the ' NOT For Road Use' stamped on it but the 'e' mark and BSAU seem to be a requirement. Could someone please enlighten me. Cheers
technically they are illegal, but i have never had a failure on any of my bikes, and the have all had race exhausts, and most of them had not for road use stamped on them
pretty sure my road legal arrow one was stamped up as standard on my gixer that I had be my next pipe on my blade an road legal arrow
As nutty says just buy a sticker or as I did a metal one that looked pucka. Polished out the (not for road use) and stuck it on and it never even got a mention in 10 mots.
whats the point in buying a road legal after market exhaust? they are no better than the standard can, i once had a road legal micron on my zx6r, when i pulled it apart i couldn't believe how restricted they were, a removeable baffle would be your best bet, but i always go for race systems
Thanks for the replies. I live in a small town and there are not very many bikers, I have been stopped three times this year. Fortunately, my bike is standard, so there was nothing to pick up on. I understand that by having a road legal exhaust I will not have as much power as if I fitted a race system. Sometimes my licence gets a few points I would hate to get some for an illegal can. I am led to believe that even if the can passes an MOT the police can still prosecute if the exhaust system does not comply with the law. As the Yoshi has no 'e' mark or obviously a BSAU number, it seems to me although it is not marked 'not for road use' it would technically be illegal. It would seem a full Akra system with an 'e' marked can would be legal and give a bit more power as it removes all restrictions from the pipes and gets shot of the cat.At least then I can easily get an MOT with the baffle in and then take it out when I want. Anyone have any alternative suggestions to the Akra ? I want a full system because |I want to get as much power/smoothness as possible but still be legal.
you cannot get points for an illegal exhaust , believe me i know , i ride in north yorkshire where gypsies have more rights than bikers. i was once nearly arrested for having a small number plate in ripon . god damn gestapo north yorkshire police.
yes as said get a sticker from the net, My Yoshi is from the US so does not have "not for road use" on it
