I did a track day last year at Mallory and it was fantastic but not exactly cheap, hiring a bike to do it on. Any suggestions for a cheapish road bike that will build confidence as a beginner? CBR/ZX6? I'd be more confident on a smaller 6/750 rather than a 1000.
Honda CB500 without question, especially for Mallory. I'm no faster there on a big bike than I am on a CB.
I'm also wanting to get into track days, The Ron Haslam school was great, but with that now gone there is no entry point. As you say, you can hire a bike at £350 per session, but it gets expensive. CB500 is a good shout, but wouldn't be enough for me. I just seen this on ebay, looks very nice: click here R6 and CBR600RR are awesome bikes also. Does anyone here have any suggestions on cost effective track days?
All depends where you are as the consistently cheaper tracks tend to be Mallory, Snetterton, Cadwell and Bedford Autodrome.
You've missed it now but in January MSV do a £600 voucher for £500. So if you get that and always use the TDRBIKE23 code for 10% off when booking the trackdays that will bring the cost of 4 trackdays down to £154.10 each. I've never done it so I'm not sure if the voucher can be bought with the 10% off code which would save you even more. Also not sure if you can use the voucher and code in conjunction when booking the trackdays. Not much help there was I? @Muffking might know? Other things you could do....the RAF Odiham trackday will be cheap but the peri track won't be as smooth or interesting as a proper track. A multi day foreign trackday with open pitlane has to be one of the best value things you can do aswell....almost guaranteed weather and shit loads of track time. Got any mates that would like to club in towards a trackbike? Share the bike and the costs.
Yeah the £600 voucher for £500 ended last week. The discount doesn't work when you buy vouchers, but it does when you spend on them. Should really join TDR though as it's their discount code.
Cost effective track day? Isle of Man gets my vote. I’m booked in for 4 nights at the start of May, so before the TT fortnight begins and the madness starts. Cottage and Ferry costing me £370 in total. That’s 3 full days riding the finest track on the planet for less than £125 per day. Granted the track is shared with a variety of vehicles travelling in both directions but that just adds to the enjoyment IMO.
I'm just outside of Luton, so Bedford Autodrome is nearby. I've not wanted to risk my road bike, but I know Bedford has lots of run off. I may give it a go this year. My Yoshi exhaust, as its pretty loud.. so I'll need to get the dB meter out and check it.
One can’t rely on these unless you have a unit that’s professionally calibrated. Also, some trackdays are drive by, and some are statically tested (some are both ). The only way to be (almost) sure you’ll be ok is totake a road silencer with you or make sure you have the baffles and screws to put back in if you’re red flagged.
Where are you based? Would you be interested in a track prepped zx6r? Background thread here by the way... https://www.1000rr.co.uk/threads/kawasaki-zx6r-track-bike.41857/ Thinking of selling as I need the space since I bought an aprilia off ebay and it doesn't given me as much of what I wanted to justify the space it's taking up. I'm going to focus on the cbr1000rr for track days. I've run it at Cadwell, Pembrey and Bedford. It has a new battery on it so all the issues are fixed. I have a quickshifter that I've taken off as it needed setting up and I haven't bothered as the bike is so light it really doesn't need it. It's dead easy to ride and doesn't feel slow at all. I paid £2800 for the bike and am happy to let it go for the same... you just won't have the issues it came with. It's not road legal but I'm pretty sure I have the v5 so you could put it back on the road with a daytime use only mot. It measured 97db with the standard exhaust with the inbuilt valve wide open. If you need it quieter you could connect that up again as the servo is still there. As long as you're not too far away I can deliver it for the diesel it costs me. This is me being slow on it in novices at Pembrey but it gives a sense of how well it goes...
Definitely, borrowed bikes are always hectic but numerous budget friendly and suitable motorcycles for beginners are available.
