I have a 2007 bike that's running a 55 profile rear tyre. I've looked at the calculators and all the information makes sense but what feels the best on these bikes in terms of the number of teeth on the sprockets? I believe that the standard bike is 16/42 and I was thinking about going down one at the front and up two at the back to 15/44. Does anyone have any recommendations other than this? I can get a standard length 520 did chain with a steel -1 front sprocket and alloy +1 rear for £130 if I want to go to 44 on the back I guess I need a longer chain. Are there tools that help me calculate the length of chain I need or does anyone happen to know? I think that the standard length is 114 links. I'm not looking to create a wheelie machine but even at Bedford's longest straight I never get up to 6th and I'm at that irritating point where I either go in to 3rd and back in to 2nd or hit the limiter before a couple of corners. I don't care about the speedo being out as it's a track bike. Thanks, Mark
I forget what's on mine as I went through a phase of trying different things, but at the last count it was 45 on the rear and 15 (-1) on the front. Any higher on the back and it front was off the deck too much for my liking, partly due to the low gearing, but made worse by the shorter wheelbase. I'm happy with where it's at now as it suits most tracks, although the newer bikes are still much more powerful.
Been in touch with chains and sprockets and have ordered a JT 15 teeth steel front sprocket and JT Racelite 44 teeth alloy rear sprocket and a did ZVMX 520 chain to match. Will report back.
Got a lovely set of 520 sprockets here in the states I'll bring back when I eventually make it home. Went -1 front and +2 rear. Currently running -1 front +1 rear in 530, so gonna enjoy that lively extra tooth and lightness there when it comes up for change time. Saying that though, I've barely put 100 miles on her since her full rebuild & engine swap, so long have I been stuck out here in the UScuntingA for work/COVID stuff. Can't wait to get back for a ride and a tinker. Enjoy it mate!!
