I have to say both are top of the list for places to go. I've been to Italy twice in the last 6 years on the bike and loved it. Not really spending enough time there. Being a massive MotoGP and Rossi fan I am desperate to see him race at his home circuit in Mugello and visit his home town of Tavullia. My dilemma is......I also want to see the TT and experience the cation close up! So, warm weather, beautiful Tuscan countryside, not to mention the route down through the Black Forest, Switzerland etc to watch the GP at Mugello and spend a couple of days in Tuscany before heading home. Also, thinking Rossi may retire before long and then I will be kicking myself. or Go to the TT for race week in 2015? Has anyone been to Mugello or anyone planning on going next year?
Did Mugello on the 'Blade last year. It's an awesome circuit and the whole event is amazing - from riding into the track and down through the mental campsites, parking next to the main grandstand, to invading the track afterwards for the podium and milling around in pit lane. Have been to Silverstone, Misano, Valencia and Barcelona and while they're good, Mugello is something else. Haven't done the TT yet, though. They're complete opposite ends of the spectrum so would be real tough to choose between them! Like you say, Rossi has 2 more years (at least) so you'd need to do Mugello before 2016 is over.
Catalunya was the other option but it's just as far to get to. Jerez even further so Mugello makes sense. I think that's what I'm going to do. If anyone is planning a trip there for next year let me know. How long did you give yourself? I was thinking of 4 easy days down there, 2-3 in the area to watch the race and explore and 4 days home. Either that or squeezing 3 days there and 3 back and just 2 days in Mugello. I live near Manchester so it's a good 300 miles to the Chunnel.
Do one next year and another the following year. I am hoping to Get to Mugello next year with the wife. leave the kids at home but would be flying not riding.
If you are that big a Rossi fan, then I would say do Mugello next year. As you never know when Rossi will hang up the gloves. The TT is on every year mate, even though I am biased and would pick the TT over any other type of racing. Especially as you are right next to the action as opposed to circuit racing where you are about half a mile away. And you can get to ride the TT circuit as well.
Yeah I'm pretty much decided....Mugello next year and TT year after. I know flying makes sense but I just have a thing that if I watch racing then I ride there. If I can't ride there I'll watch it on TV! lol.
May see u there. After watching the last race and both me and the wife being a Big Rossi fan we wanted to go there.
Well no doubt I'll be on here a few times leading up to it so up for meeting up for sure. I'm going alone at the minute. My missus hates bikes! Lol
I did Mugello last year and other than Rossi binning it on the third corner in front of me it was an unmissable experience! Never seen so many of the yellow brigade in one place as Mugello. The atmosphere at the track is amazing and we stayed at a stone cottage on the lake about 15miles away which was beautiful
Despite being so into MotoGP for some reason the races have eluded me! Been to a bunch of BSB races but the only GP race I went to was Donington in 09 and both Rossi and Lorenzo binned it. It pissed it down! I'm going Silverstone this year but it's the races abroad I like. Mugello seems the most natural choice for atmosphere. I was looking to stay somewhere near Tavullia so I have a decent ride into the circuit but nothing is set in stone yet. I'm not into the camp site scene........give me a comfy bed and a breakfast and coffee in the morning please! lol
There is no decent ride to the circuit unless you enjoy streaming past ten miles of queuing cars with hundreds of other bikes, stay in Scarperia, and enjoy the nightlife, I had a great time this year staying in Prato, but now wish I had stayed closer. A brilliant race and atmosphere.
looking into going next year with my wife too but like remal will be flying be good to have meet though
If you go you simply MUST camp at the circuit on Friday and Saturday nights - Its the most bonkers yet amazing atmosphere that is unlike anywhere else I ended up with my phone linked to a huge sound system playing a DJ set for a few hours - the Italians loved Big Country and the Proclaimers plus whatever else I played - we ended up with a free bar and even food. I also want to return in 2015 - its such a tough call - to really enjoy the trip down I'd give yourself a full week - you could then nail the return up through Germany and into Belgium past Brussels to miss the tolls totally. I also spent a very good Saturday late afternoon with another DJ set over the far side of the circuit where 'a couple of beers' turned into a 6 / 8 pint session! When I flew in we went via Bologna and got really cheap tickets with Brussels airlines at £140 return WITH luggage so took tents etc. flew back Monday with a hotel near the airport Sunday night. I can assure you if you don't stay walking distance from the circuit you will leave thinking 'what have I missed' Not sure about riding down or flying in 2015 - both are great ways to enjoy it - flying certainly cheaper than riding but its a great route as you say with Germany, Switzerland then Italy (where motorway tolls are killers)
I came back yesterday, got to do a write up on here when I get time, got in at 4am yesterday, done 16hrs on the bike including fuel, coffee n channel tunnel home. Did what Alblade said, thanks to him as left circuit straight away n rode to Bellinzona, Switzland and stayed in hotel then done the long stint home, up through Germany using the Autobahns. Was a longer way but done satnav to places up the west side and broke them into 300km hits so easier to do. Long slog, but makes me smile when I think of the mad, sorry, mental Italians wanting to make as noise as possible with either a chainsaw with no blade, a shopping trolley with a engine on it just to push around and rev or a man with a guitar with a chainsaw engine installed or the man wearing ear defenders pushing a petrol engined air raid siren !!! To name just a few !! Lol Campsite is a lawless state, asked where camping area and the Marshall just flapped his arms in the air, I asked anywhere apart from the track and he agreed yes, and people sure did camp anywhere. All people so friendily, offering help to park, tools to work on bike to free of floating discs seized. And call yourself a Rossi fan, most are, well nearly all, have tshirts caps tattoos 46 shaved in their hair, you haven't seen anything lol Go !! Book it now and go. We rode through the nurburgring, Baden Baden, B500,then back roads to Milan through Andermatt switzland then on the more ways to Mugello. Needed more time though, riding straight all the places above, needed a day in each to ride around to enjoy more. Please please do it, sorry I'm rambling, still tired.
There you go - 2 folk both saying the same - more time needed! Not sure if I'd want to nail on the way down or back - doing both such hard work - to me leave the Saturday before then nail it home - I am sure for Paul to get into Switzerland the Sunday night was a winner - god I'm envious but thinking of Misano in September but atmosphere won't be a patch on Mugello as no camping at the circuit Look forward to the full write up Paul - get some sleep!
My wife hates me on a bike but loves the TT, moto GP, BSB etc.. and been to moto gp at siilverstone with me and BSB in the past I love her mainly as she has almost the same amount of hatred for Foozball as me also
Also, use Ventura luggage, easy to take on and off for hotels, don't move and stable even at one 161, that's mph not kph lol Used a Givi 307 tanklok bag, got to thank Sinwave for recommending that size, but perfect for all toll money, paperwork n stuff, didn't even notice it was there.
Tavullia's ok for a visit but not much going on round there and not worth staying overnight, imo. We rode to Misano in '11 and called in to Tavullia after traversing the Tuscan hills and although the trip was great, the area around there and the event wasn't a patch on Mugello. Personally I would stay in Florence for Mugello, with a 1/2 day trip for the pilgrimmage to Tavullia. Beautiful city, lots of great hotels, bars, restaurants, shops, sightseeing and really handy for the track. The rode up from Florence into Mugello is a nice little ride and traffic is fine on a bike even on raceday. Here's some pics from our trip last year (no mountain shots as took some new roads for a change): http://1000rr.co.uk/touring/11277.htm
We set off from London so saved 1/2 a day each way on your journey. Calais-Mugello can be done in 3 easy autoroute days, but you'd be mad to miss out on the scenic routes. If you haven't already done the Alps then I'd look at taking 6 leisurely days to head down via the Black Forest, Swiss passes, drop down into the Italian Lakes and onto Florence, and then a more direct 3 days straight back via the Mont-Blanc tunnel and eastern France.
