    Hi all,

As if im not confused enough about what sort of tyres to go for (and yes I have used the search and read every thread i can find for about 15 solid hours now lol) I am now struggling with speed ratings.

I have settled on the dunlop Sportsmart. I currently run qualifier rr's and having quite low confidence in grip need to have something quite sticky. Theyre probably well beyond what i will use them for and if im honest a pair of harder wearing road 3's would probably suit better but as i say i need to know in my head i have some super grippy hoops if i am to enter a bend at anything other than the speed limit lol. Im hoping a track tuition day will help this fear of tyres losing traction but thats for another day.

Anyway, back to speed rating. All of the tyres I am finding in the correct fitment (190/55/17 rear - i;m also making the move to 55 profile) are 'w' rated.

i have read this is up to 168 mph so is this not too low for the blade (an rr5)? I thought the tyre speed rating had to exceed your machines capabilites?

    Any advice gratefully received

    Nick

How long will you be travelling at 168mph for? Other than that a 'Y' hoop is rated at 186mph. Probably not much help.

They will be fine and by the sound of things you will not be going that fast anyway? But if you want some awesome, confidence inspiring tires - go for Michelin pilot powers - 165 notes delivered on eBay!

I have the Sportsmarts on my blade for a year. Seen 150 on track and not going to way what in Spain and they have been great. I don't really take much notice myself on speed ratings when it comes to bikes as I would have thought most fast road / track based tyres would be more than man enough these days for ltr sports bikes

    cheers guys

I didnt know if there were any rules that said you needed to have tyres sufficient for the machines top speed. Didnt want to end up invalidating insurance or anything.

    W it is then

    Cheers Remal,

Are you happy with the sportsmarts? Any regrets or negatives?

    Cheers

I had Avon Viper extremes on super sticky but just got 1500 miles out of them, had them on my R6 but when I got my blade I put sport smarts on and am very happy with ther grip levels and good feed back to let you know what is going on under you BUT and this is a big BUT make sure you warm them up before you go gunning into any bends or lighting her up coming out of bends as they will let go.

Cheers mate, Ill be sure to warm them well.

I'm not too fussed on how long they last, would rather pay for too sticky then find they werent quite sticky enough.

My qualifier rr's have given me 3k which I was quite pleased with.

    Are those the sportsmarts??

Tread pattern is very much like my rr's pictured below. You can see from the tread wear indicators im slightly in need of new rubber lol

    Yay it finally appeared!!

My mate just fitted them for a Spain trip but wasn't happy with the grip compared to his bt's. He had an onboard camera and showed me the video of when they let go which resulted in underwear changes all round.! If you want super sticky and don't care about mileage don't get these imho

Racetecs ! Best sticky rubber out there, why else would they be used as a control tyre in racing? Managed to squeeze 2000 miles out of the rear, not cheap though.

I use perrelli Diablo corsa 3's
Triple compound so soft on edges and harder in the middle
I have had more confidence in these than any other tyre I have used

I have had many different makes of tyre over the years, Bridgestone bt014,15,16,20, Dunlop quali, avon, 2CT's etc and they are th best bar non.

Only down side I found and 50% my fault that. Found the edge of their limit on track by pushing them to hard when exiting a corner. Only reason I will be trying something more track bases next time.
