My excuse is that I attempted to do DIY on the bike whilst the kids were at home. Daddy... can I have a cold drink, can I have a hot drink, can I have some crisps? etc. etc. You know how it goes. Externally, I'm all like, yes of course my little darlings; internally it's very much - leave me the fuck alone for just 5mins..

So I'm sitting in the sun very carefully cleaning the old gasket sealant off of the generator cover, remove the old stator. Give everything a good clean down with a lint-free cloth. Remove the old stator, put new one in. Dry and clean the gasket surfaces so they are completely smooth. Offer the generator cover, complete with new stator inserted, up to the bike. The magnetic force sucks the cover out of my hand to form a perfect seal. I tighten the generator cover in a star pattern to not distort the cover. Start the bike. Measure the charging voltage at idle. 13.6v - result. Measure at 4k rpm 13.9v. All good.

Go out for a ride all seems fine. Park up for lunch. Get back on the bike. 5min down the road an horrendous noise - the literal bag of spanners noise. Immediately pull in the clutch. Come to a stop. Before I get to switch off, the noise has gone. I get off and inspect the chain and disks for any sign of an issue - trapped stone etc. Nothing.

I attach the findings of my investigation - can you tell what the problem was?! :/
