Went into crewe honda today for oil filter and was told not to use fully synthetic oil use semi synthetic oil as they get problems with the clutches useing fully syn oil 32 quid for shell sure i can get cheaper on ebay so which oil or dont it matter as long as its oil cbr1000rr6
I guess they need to get some semi moving....lol Please please someone tell me where do they get this fully synth clutch slip crap from! When they say stuff like that it makes them sound like a bunch of idiots! Fully Synth Castrol Power One Racing 10-30 best oil IMO.
Honda recommend Castrol Power 1 10-30 fully synthetic at the moment (at the moment because it's whom ever writes the biggest cheque) Plus it also depends what your watching i.e. with Motul being advertised on John McGuniess's bike. John Mcguiness by (MrB), on Flickr Having spoken to Honda UK Tech support their official line was Castrol Power 1 but they are more than happy to use a good quality semi synthetic. Personally I have been using the Power 1 with no problems albeit a 10-40 and not 10-30 only because I couldn't get it in time for the oil change. Bike has 3.5K on the clock now since May and has had 2 oil changes. I think the clutch clip issue is a bit of a blast from the past. I've said it before that all good quality oils are so good these days I don't think you can go wrong especially with the amount of times we change it. A good quality fully synthetic is good for 16000 miles before it starts to degrade but I'll be changing mine every 2-3K which is over servicing it really. Not had any Blades come in due to clutch slip down to the wrong oil.
Good info that, and yes it was 10-30 castrol power fully synth dobles use and recommend. I've always used it since I've had fireblades ( which isn't that long tbh,- just 3 years) but 14k miles and not a sniff of a problem with the clutch, and never burnt more than 200ml between oil changes. Great photo btw.
Quite right, and I fully agree most branded 10-30 or 10-40 grade fully or semi oils are no problem.... I know what your saying about sponsorship but they were commissioned by Honda to produce or formulate an oil for the CBR and that's what they came up with in theory so it's a possibility that more went on than just the stickers on the motor. All that rubs me up is this fully causes clutch slip crap, modern oils that are formulated for motorcycles take into account wet clutches and additives etc that offer the best lubrication for the bike in question. Ask them to explain why fully causes clutch slip and remember if someone can't explain something it normally means they don't know what they are talking about...lol and yeah awsome photo, You take that MrB? Also it may say Motul on the bike but that don't mean Motuls in it....our sponsor stickers kept us on track but my choice of oil etc kept us going round it!
Detergents in the oil where originally seen as a problem for wet clutches as the oil would literately wash the friction material off the plates causing the slip. People who make motorcycle oil have been switched onto this for quite a while now lol. Nearly all oil comes from the same tanker as a base oil then is sold to Castrol, Silkolene, Motul etc. etc. who then add their own combinations of friction reducers, enhancers and additives which create their own brand.
I run Shell ultra fully sync 10-40 in my 2008. It's a bit expensive. But I don't do many miles so I just change it once a year.
What is the oil service interval on an RR5? I used to do my Zx6R at the beginning of the season once a year. Ive got Power 1 and wanna look after the blade, but not break the bank.
Im using Power 1 too! allways used fully synthetic in my 97 blade from year 1 and after 75000 miles the insides were still ogasmic and never had any engine probs so thats good enough for me. just for Info I change my oil once a year under normal circumstances.
you may get lots of different answers but I can fully recommend asking these guys also http://1000rr.co.uk/opie-oils/2706.htm free advice and they have some cracking deals on also
Oil is one of those tricky subjects! It depends a lot on the question being asked... what's the best oil for my fireblade? what's the correct oil for my fireblade? what's the cheapest oil for my fireblade? Also as someone that rips down engines run for entire seasons on one type of oil I have to ask sometimes where do people get to the what's good and what's not? After all unless your pulling pistons etc how will you ever know if harm is being done by running the wrong grade or type of oil... I can tell you you'd be surprised how cheap oils can stand up over time when compared to high end oils, I've seen high end oils that have worn engines more so than the cheapest oils on the market! However we place trust in big names to give us the best protection for our investment and most would not risk running anything other than the best money can buy.. I can confuse the subject even more as I run Australian oil stabilisers in some of my bikes and they have measured up spot on even after double the serivice time compared to the same motors run without it manufactures will not cover those motors if stabilisers are used even though the evidence shows they are better for it! It's always an interesting subject but I'd have to say my frustration lies with advice that's not backed up with proof or evidence to back up recommendations...that said it's not always possible to do so and how can you offer data when there is no real fixed way of testing one bike to another in the real world... My advice is same as always whatever oil you choose change it often and keep your levels correct, service your bike each year (end of season IMO) and use the best filters you can afford.
