While out for an early morning blast the bike had a sudden loss of power, was cracking on a bit 135ish not sure what gear but around 10,000rpm throttle well open, it felt as though I'd let go of the throttle ie lots of engine breaking and lasted for a second or so. I intially thought I'd blown something so eased off checked mirrors no smoke then checked gears, I have a hm + quickshifter and dont think that I'd inadvertantly caught the gear lever. I pressume that if i'd gone down a gear there would have been one hell of a clunk and it defo hadn't up shifted. I resumed riding normally after a 10 second or so panick and all seemed well I just rode on a bit slower. There were no odd noises and I think the ignition hadn't cut as there was no zorst popping and banging. The bike is a late 2008 with full arrow system, PCV, custom map and HM+ qs. Any ideas as this was most alarming. Thanks
Possibly a power cut.. Check terminals on the battery maybe? My pals r1 did this snd it was a loose earth on the battery.. Worth a punt? Hope you get it sorted mate
Thanks for the replies have checked battery seems ok although it is on its last legs but still starts as long as I ride it regularly. A mate with a GSXR mentioned checking the stator and rectifier by measuring the voltage across the terminals with the engine off and running Would anyone be so kind as to explain this to me. Thanks
You can carry out a resistance check of the alternator windings first and then checks on the Reg/Rectifier. You can then test the voltage coming from the alternator and they are all even. Look on YouTube and search for this subject, you will see what's required, most bikes are the same in principle, just the wiring colours that are different. Basically, the alternator pushes out an alternating three phase output which increases with revs, this then gets converted to a stabilised or regulated DC voltage, which runs all the equipment and keeps the battery charged.
My hm plus was doing this when accelerating hard, done it several times on overtakes and scared the shite out of me! Anyway Arthur sorted it for me, it was something to do with vibrations causing the sensor to think I was going for a gear (obviously briefly cutting the engine) the sensor was slightly twisted or something but all sorted now. I'm sure Arthur could explain this a lot better than me
