Spoke to someone at the cafe today, who has got a new R1, a red and white one in fact.

He told me about a problem with it, in that it needs to keep it on a trickle charger, otherwise the battery goes flat and he can't use it - showed me the little socket that he has arranged to make all this easier and quicker.

He told me that it was a known issue, and that he had read about it on the internet forum, and that it was due to all the electronics, I suppose, draining the power and maybe not charging it up again on short/slow journeys. Looking at the forums it seems the bike has quite a small battery ? and maybe not much margin ? I don't know.

Anyway, does anyone know if this is still an issue, or whether it was early models ?

I came very close to buying an R1 myself - and people do move on from here to other sportsbkes like the R1, hence the question here.

    Thanks
    Matt

No problem with mine yet, had it for 7 months, use it weekends (far to busy in the week) and track days, no charging in between, just the same as my blade...

I should say though that the key has a "parking lights" postion if turned full off, its so close to the sterring lock postion that some people forget and turn it all the way to lock it, however even thuogh the light are not on (need to flick the light switch) it will drain the battery in that postion

Thanks for your reply, and that it good to know that you have no issues with yours.

I suppose it is the way with these things - for every one person who reports "an issue" there will be hundreds if not thousands who have no problems at all.

It's no surprise when you consider the tiny size of the new R1 Battery, my mate was warned of potential issues with it draining rapidly with the ignition turned on without starting it, Apparently suck the life out of it really quickly...
