On later blades the stator problem was resolved but ran into other problems like heavy oil consumption which to me was unacceptable when Honda quoted 800 per litre was acceptable well in their books.
I faced the same dilemma last year but in my bikes defence the only problem I've had with it is the stator issue. Bought it on 8.5k and it's now done 22.5k. That's in over three years of fun riding. I've spent loads on bits and setting up the suspension and PCV so in the grand scheme of things I thought it was width spending the money on.
Yep having thought long and hard about it I think I'll buy the upgraded flywheel and stator as I love the bike and it's the first time it's let me down. I don't suppose anyone knows the parts numbers for the upgraded parts by any chance. I just need to work out where to get them from now. We don't have an abundance of dealers left in the north east
Cheers Bandit. Got them for that from David Silver spares and some liquid gasket. Now all I need is a flywheel puller to get the flywheel off unless someone tells me it's easy to do and I don't need a tool to do it?
The rotor is on a taper a gentle tap on the sides should release, there is no woodruff key like the earlier blades. Bolt the new rotor on but don't tap the replacement as it would lose its magnetic strength.
Thanks masterblader I appreciate the advice. With regards the liquid gasket is it a case of simply squeezing it on or use a toothpick and put a tiny smear on? I've also ordered a paper gasket and so now I'm wondering which is best to use?
Both crankcase and cover need to be clean and dry so gasket sealant can adhere to the face area. Small smear of sealant on the both sides to form a seal when torqued up
Thanks for that, I've cleaned it as best I can with a Stanley blade. After searching the net and manual there appear to be different torquing values for the engine case bolts. I'm going with 9 ft lbs.
On most cover bolts torque is 12 Nm, the manual on the 2004-07 does not list cover settings. Don't have the settings in ft/lb
12 Nm is 9 ft lbs, so I'm on the right lines. Thanks very much, just got to wait three weeks now for the parts to arrive lol
New stator and flywheel arrived today and installed. I'm struggling a bit to see the change in voltage when over 5k revs due to my mutlimeter being pants lol. I suppose I'll have to see if the bike dies again and at least this time I'll know it's the reg/rec.
Interesting post. Not the first time somebody says about reg/rec failing in those bikes. Having a spare one with me at all times might be a good idea. I'm quite tempted to get one of those upgraded stators and flywheels as well. I've never replaced flywheels though, I always thought I needed a special key for that.
In the end I got sick of waiting for the special tool to come from the US (it still hasn't) so I went to the local fasteners and bought a M20 bolt with a right hand thread. Job as they say is jobbed £3 can't say fairer than that.
