Hi all, thanks for all the replies. The popular combinations seem to be -1 F +2 R and -1 F + 1 R. The Gearing Commander Chart shows a lot of figures but does not directly give an indication of the changes made to acceleration for each gearing combination. The Blade has a good top end speed and I do not mind reducing it a bit but I can't make an informed decision because I can't find out how much acceleration I will gain (or lose) for each gear combination. Even a simple thing like 0 to 100 mph or standing quarter mile figures would help so that I can compare them to stock settings. Is there a relatively simple way to calculate this ? Any help would be appreciated..............lots of added weight for my bike now following Xmas.
There's a fookin simple way to work out the increase in accel mate. Buy a 15T front, fit it and try it. Cost you about £15
Thanks megawatt, but I would also need to buy one or two other rear sprockets as well. I wonder if the Missus would stand at the end of the road with a stop watch while I try the different combinations out ?
^ Yes. Plenty. Even with stock gearing, pinning the throttle in 1st, 2nd, 3rd out of corners is not easy and i doubt many can actually fully open it on regular road conditions. Sure in a straight line it will give you more juice but then you have to struggle to keep the front down. So i go for more easy to use power - just my opinion though!
On 2008 onwards the overall ratios were slightly wider than all the other models and is more user friendly for the road user. In laymans terms the 2008 + models is doing 75mph @5000 whilst the other blades are doing 80mph. Tried a 15t front on my 04/07 engine didnt like the delivery or the vibration.
Still dont get this vibration thing, changing a sprocket cant cause a vibration that wasnt there before, unless its ill fitted or you buy cheap sprockets. Ive changed hundreds of sprockets on various bikes and never found one causing vibration.
The change in acceleration will be relative to the % change in gearing, but its not as simple as that because you can only put down so much power before it turns into wheelies/wheelspin. Ignore the numbers, you need to just try it and see how it feels.
Renthal sprockets fore and aft, probable cause is the tighter turning radius on a 530 from 4k on the bike was not as smooth as 16 toother doing a back to back test. Ill fitting a sprocket is almost an impossibilty. Rode a blade with 15t X 525 which proved a point to me.
Thanks for the replies. I realise that experimentation will give the best results but I can't afford to purchase various sprockets and try them out. There seems a lot of 'discussion' on what the best chain type is on here and elsewhere. Some opinions say that dropping the front teeth makes a tighter curve which is not so good for a 530 chain and thus a 525 or 520 should be used. Opinion on this does vary though. I do not currently have any issue with the front lifting, I tend to keep my weight fairly forward, so a little lift would be fine. I suppose I do ride hard and do pin it as often as I can and although I am still getting used to the bike I want some more acceleration especially out from bends. A new exhaust system PC and tune on the dyno will help but that is coming after the sprockets and suspension work. So I am now dithering between -1 F and +2 R or -1 F +1 R and also dithering between a 530/525/520 chain....... decisions decisions. It I will go for Tsubaki chain and Renthal sprockets, so that is something decided. Anyone got Valentinos number or Burgess's ? even Casy Stoner's will do ?
I always buy 525 DID Gold X ring, doesn't rust the side plates and I've had 25,000 miles outta the one that I will replace this winter. Chaincare is a lube with Mucoff dry ptfe every 200 miles and a wash with parafffin every month !
Wow you want more....! Your the man, do what I do stay in a lower gear and hold it for longer, get a quick action throttle, full system, rework air intake, filters, PCV and map, problem solved! I like to keep mine stock gearing hold the gear higher in the rev range and pin it mid turn that way I have more top end then all those that go lower...lol I only shift when I see the light and I have NEVER been passed by a lower geared bike, you could always get a nice big fat V Twin for more drive...lol
Cheers guys, yes Arthur I miss the drive of the two Ducatis I had and the SP1.................but I do not miss the bills for the Ducatis. I always want more Arthur, been like that all my life mate, more women, more drink, more fun, more speed......Oh yeah.........and more money. I am holding it in gear as high as possible, but it just isn't scaring me enough . Yeah I do need the full exhaust system and the PC and the intake mods and the dyno..............and some more money. The rear Ohlins was expensive enough and I need to pay to have it fitted yet and possibly re-sprung to my weight and set up and still need the KTech rework on the front. Damn bikes.............it is such an expensive addiction, I hate to think how much I have spent on them in 38 years, that would be scary. Must remember to buy a lottery ticket.
lol I KNOW what your saying mate.. Thats your problem chap your too used to the twins, but I agree a superbike should be superscary...lol Try closing your eyes for a count of two before corner entery...lol Mate my advice would be drop one tooth on the front and see how you go, got to be worth a tenner.. What years your bike mate?
what you reckon is worth doing to the air intakes on a 10' Arthur think Im going to go for either a 44 or down one on the front not sure yet Thanks Tom
Hi Arthur, mines a 2006 and it's black so it should be faster than all the other colours lol. I often close my eyes when I am riding, doesn't everyone ? especially when cornering and every time a deer jumps out on me, which is pretty regular. The V twin grunt coming out of corners is something I miss and probably suits my riding style. In 1998 I went from a CBR600 to a brand new R1....that was scary. I accidentally wheelied it off the forecourt when I picked it up and only just got the front down before a major roundabout. Adrenalin is brown. I really love the Blade, but a superbike should be scary, maybe I should ride only at night with the lights off lol..........could be fun. I think dropping one from the front is a good start the rest of the mods will have to wait .....at least a few more months. Cheers.
Is that a bit like wotsisface "only brake when I see God" ... so you have 'seen the light' then Art ... sh1t you are one scary dude
