I don't think it was the case, since it was in 2010 fairings (new colors in 2010), however, yes, you're right, since that was the only 2010 case I ever heard of.

I just messaged guy about a 08 for sale which he said used a bit of oil. He said "i top the oil up after every track day, just takes a couple of glugs really - it smokes a bit when cold but is fine once it gets going. "

Does that sound about right? Think it will be oil from cold or maybe just condensation?

Bike has new clocks but about 38k mls apparently.

I top mine up after every track day but it doesn't kick out white smoke.

Too hard to say without seeing, but if it is only on start-up it could be either oil in the cyl head from worn valve seals OR condensation. One would hope that the owner of the bike should be able to determine which.

Yes, but people never post the good stuff. And half of those stories begin: 'I know a guy who . . .' with very little basis of fact.

    "
Work with these engines all the time - the 08’s have a well deserved reputation for burning oil But more importantly the 08 bikes and late ones registered 09 all have the soft plated crank issue - it’s the luck of the draw how long they last but eventually they all fail and end up stripping the primary teeth
We tune them for use in bikes and cars and always avoid the 08 motors
The symptoms start with a whine or squeal when revved and quickly deteriorate"

I've found that most makes have oil horror stories attached to them - Ktms (which I'm looking at buying at the moment) seem to burn loads , forum posts regarding early triumph street triples and daytonas all seem to mention keeping an eye on the oil as well.

Mine doesn't whine or make any dodgy noises and it's got 30k miles on it.
