Indeed it does.... But there's some good riding to be had on the way down The more I think about it, I'm starting to think bikes in the van would be the best way to do southern France lol And exactly why we are doing Spain on the ferry... Just roll on the boat for afternoon, few beers, kip, wake up, breakfast chill and good to go that afternoon! Awesome roads strain off the boat (apparently)
. I done the Route Napoleon a few weeks ago, and done what Jimbo has mentioned (Calais >Troyes>Grenoble in 2 days) didn't take the train back as wanted to do the RN, in both directions. 6 day round trip...(just under 2000 miles) Next year, going to look at the Train option, for outward or return journey, just to give us more time down South
Been looking in the 2 GP trip for September and all looks good - latest post on MotoGP page did not have work provisional for the dates motogp.com · 2014 MotoGP™ calendar revealed Ferry Timetables to France and Spain from UK - Brittany Ferries Motorbike Corner Rough Plan: Thursday 11th September after work travel to Dover for B&B Friday morning early ferry to Calais, ride to Belgium / Germany border for Railsavers train to Northern Italy - checkin by early afternoon, Saturday arrive Italy about 10:00 I think, head to Misano Circuit, possibly via Marco Simoncelli's home town for a coffee Sunday 14th September - Misano MotoGP Monday -> Friday - travel the 950 mils via Monaco, Cote D'Azure, Andorra / Pyrenees to Aragon Fri afternoon Sunday 21st September Aragon for MotoGP Either Monday 22nd 15:15 Santander to Portsmouth Ferry, Arrives Tuesday 14:15 or Tuesday 23rd 10:30 Bilbao to Portsmouth - arrives Wednesday 09:00 Not cheapest trip with train and ferry but camping at GP's and maybe the odd night on the move any ideas / input / suggestions welcome - Update - Ferry costs are currently standing at: £25 to secure crossing / cabin now - balance paid nearer time 4 people in an outside cabin = £151 each 2 People in an outside cabin = £184 each Crossing is £119 each, cabins range from £100 - £149 depending on inside / outside / large / small etc. Absolutely no way can you get from Norther Spain to the UK by riding for those prices, and you would struggle to do it in 24 hours too
Got rough 'indicative' price of the train down - looking at £400 each person with 3 in a private compartment - that sounds loads so we are having a think / looking at options. 900 miles on quickest route from Calais to Misano - time presures as one self employed could be problem - any suggestions welcome!
Easyjet...but not so much fun Putting the bikes on the train is a very good way of saving time, but so expensive. My recent fuel bill to Nice and back...approx £210 plus a bit for tolls + 3 nights hotel etc So cost would be about the same as taking the train..If time is an issue, little alternative
I suppose one way is to rent a 3 bike trailer.... (if there are 3 of you going).....and share the driving and petrol cost. It would also probably be the quickest way of getting down there too. Any other way than riding all the way down kind of takes away the adventure aspect of the trip a bit though.
We see booked 6 of us 3rd august get on the pont avon from Plymouth to Santander done this route 3 times 1st year headed over Pyrenees ended up In Monaco 2nd year went down Pyrenees ended up in Marbella . This year we are heading to algarve in Portugal routes we make up on the way last 2 trips 2500 -3000 miles this one a bit shorter but this one includes 4 days in a all inclusive 5 star hotel can't wait !!!!! http://youtu.be/9lq021AZhwg http://youtu.be/A869dxysJ8c Cringe worthy but good times ha ha
Ninja, we ride from misano to Aragon then ferry home, so trailer no good. Wedgie, I spy a repsol garage lol
I fancy a trip to Scarborough to see my folks. Would just be sheer coincidence if it was the same weekend as 'cock of the North' at Oliver's Mount'. Sorry Mum!
Currently planning a trip from Basildon to Qaesada near Alicante in Spain to visit the Fockers. Looks like a 2.6k mile round trip although fancy coming back via the alps for some better roads so could well be longer. Will be first Eurotrip on a bike and the blade is the perfect weapon of choice can't actually wait. The bro in law is planning on making the same Journey but he will be in his car so means I don't have to load the bike down with loads of gear can just shove it all in the motor along with any spares.
My first time last year and it was fecking awesome so going again with Steve(firebloke) and Gary b 7th sep to the 17th would be great if you can come with us.
Looking at doing my trips the other way round to usual this year, normally big trip is September and small weekender is May. But this year I am hoping to do a run to Le Mans for the motogp then down to Southern France and across to the Ardeche. In fact anywhere where it's not bloody raining like last year! Weekender most likely to be the British motogp. Where it undoubtedly will rain.
