some years ago motor cycle news done a test on different helmets, and the cheapo helmets performed better than the megga bucks ones did. there was hell to play, as the "expensive helmet brigade" had all kinds of excuses.but not one of them "stood up"

That's a distorted version of the truth at best. At least MCN got a scoop exclusive shock story though ;)

I have an Arai but I'm not fixed to one brand. Ultimately it's down to what feels comfortable on your head. Personally I feel that any money you spend on a helmet can never be too much money. It's the one thing that stands between your brain and the tarmac if it all goes turdyballs. I have to confess that I simply cannot understand the logic with people who'll gleefully spend £500 on a zorst but then baulk at spending the same on the most important piece of equipment you'll ever buy. Sure Arai are expensive but they're proven, well-made and if they fit your head right then it's a bit of a no-brainer (no pun intended) if you ask me.

I think I recall this apparent revelation, I believe none of the helmet manufacturers or the H&S bods could agree where the impact zones for a helmet were and therefore what tests would reveal which helmets will provide better protection.

When it comes to research of this kind it is really helpful to understand who is funding it, its then quite easy to understand if the findings are of value to the consumer for the manufacturer who commisioned the tests.

As usual there can be supporing evidence presented in a variety of ways followed by a contrasting set of evidence supporting an alternative perspective, eventually it becomes very difficult for the lay person to determine who they should trust. Appaling when you consider lives may be at stake.

Having said all that the Sharp scheme appears well put together and was founded by the Department of Transport, who are open about the tests they perform providing detail on how they test and for the variety of tests they perform. I think I'll review my next helmet purchase here before buying.

IMO, and from what I remember.............

As for SHARP ratings... do some homework on it before you say cheap helmets offer better protection. As said before, it is all based on who is sponsoring the analysis.

You are going to trust the ratings of the Dept of Transport??? Basically the same people who can't even renew a license without losing a motorcycle entitlement??? HAHAHA

Arai have analysed crashes for years and years, and their helmets are designed to offer more protection in the areas where it is needed such as chin bar, temples, back of head...

SHARP's main impact test point is dead on top of the head. Arai see it that not that many people crash and hit the direct top of their head.

    Just saying...

Sure did. I can't imagine that all helmets would take that many blows to a steel bolt before breaching.
