Some great replies, it made for an interesting read.

I once brought a bike predominantly on appearance. It was an SP1, I had yearned for one ever since they came out. I was so in love with it when I brought it that I only took it out for a 5 minute test ride on a pretty straight road.

It was my most disappointing buy ever. In hindsight, I think it had been crashed and repaired, although I had not spotted that of course. It ran wide on fast bends and I nearly wiped myself out every time I started to push it. I think the chassis must have been out of line but I never got it checked. I should have brought the SP2 which I understand is said to be a much better bike.

The blade hit all the right things for me, in budget, great looks and fast enough for the roads.
