Don't buy a cheap and nasty multimeter. Digital ones can give you false readings at times i.e. they will show 12v but actually it is fooked and can't deliver any current so when you connect the widget it doesn't actually work. Saying that I have a cheapish one but I also have a few test bulbs wired up for situations like that, but that is because I am aware of the problem and am too tight to buy a decent fluke. Still miss my old AVO 7 even if it did weigh a ton.
