Be careful what you wish for Ken, I have been known to outstay my welcome. Gonna be heading west with er indoors in the MX5 at end of month, but don't think we'll get to Deb'n.
Here you go MW, had some spare time today so thought I would have a go on my portable TIG at 10Amps, people always ask how thin can I weld? So a few blades later....lol Im new to TIG and its incredibly hard to give those that dont know the process the 1 penny gives you the scale of the Tungsten used for these welds it has to be about .5 of a mm off the surface at all times!! Too slow you burn holes, to fast it dont weld, touch it on the surface its fugged! I need a better welder that goes lower than 10A as this is as low as she goes...lol The steel box is 0.6mm thick
Are you winding me up Arthur ? coz if you're not, I'll be packing all my gear into the car and I'll be up yours for some lessons???
lol, no mate I have been Mig welding for years but the TIGs all new to me like you Ive wanted to learn it for a long time but never had a TIG welder! This is done with a Thermal Arc 181i Mig,Tig,Arc three way welder and so far its taken me two bottles of Argon to get here Thats around two hours weld time with this size bottle I plan to invest in a TIG only AC/DC welder next year for Alloy but they say stainless is harder! Ive some exhaust systems to make this winter in stainless and have always used the MIG but I need to get up a level to match the production stuff you see around, Id like a cab and some Ti rods but the rods alone are a grand!
I feel the need to say a very rude word under my breath, but rest assured it is one of gobsmacked admiration.
Cheers mate, I said when I can do razor blades im good to go...lol I wont photo the pile of twenty or so fugged ones...lol 0.6mm thick (no filler)
haha yeah watch those caps, funny when people touch down with an earthed iron and blow big holes in the PCB coz the caps still charged...lol
I am totally usless at welding but I would say when it comes to shining alloy, titanium etc I would be pretty good at it.thats nine years of manufacturing aircraft and missile parts for you Titanium being the worst to do as the secret of a great shine is to try and keep the heat down when polishing out imperfections.
Missiles ? :O Whats the secret "dont rub the nose to hard...." lol As you prob know I do a little polishing too Megawatt feel free to kick me out your thread
yeah done them Javelin anti tank jobbies for BAE including the control gear housing and the fixture rack that inserted the payload.also done a lot of titanium work for landing gear and fuselage parts for the jsf 35 and eurofighter. used to hate working on it as tooling heads used to break so easy and if you didnt get it stopped in time there was a few grand in the bin.
Have done mate but its crude, trigger style iron and cut strips of old panels to make filler material!
