It has been scientifically proven that a noise which in 'isolation' does not 'appear' noisy to the user WILL, over time, damage their hearing irrevocably!

Only a complete Tit would ride a motorcycle regularly without them!

And in the TT special Motorcycle news sports magazine there is an interview with Michael Rutter who always wears earplugs and even he is saying that a bit of Tinnitus is creeping in .

To be fair to old Sinewave whilst the choice of words may not be to everyone's taste I think he is trying and rightly so to over emphasise the danger this issue has raised ,me i am sat here with a constant ringing in the ear which is very boring so if this. Saves young Tyke his hearing than so be it .

And i agree wearing ear protectors is something i need to start doing my problem is i have been riding for about 30 years moto x ,enduro and in the last 18 months superbikes and i have never worn them before the only time i wear them is when my mrs is snoring and i cant get to sleep.:D

For me its about getting used to them and remembering to put them in as i have loads of them knocking about

I understand what he is trying to put across Mike. As you say though a "better choice of words" may be a better way of putting views across.

Just because I don't wear earplugs doesn't exactly make me a complete tit does it?

Fair enough Col, you carry on mate, only trying to help as ignorance on this subject is rife amongst Bikers.

You now can move forward (or not) well informed! :)

I didn't used to wear ear plugs at all but started to notice ringing in the ear after rides (tinnitus) I now wear them or ear phones to cancel out the wind noise as best as possible. I also feel faster with them in as it's like some weird disconnection and you feel almost like your playing a game :D

You also need to make sure you fit them properly. If they are not in all the way and can touch your helmet at all sticking out then the noise is actually worse than without any ;)

see there you go again, your very dismissive of peoples right to choose what they want, regardless of wether you think it's bad, wrong etc...

the same could be said for joe bloggs calling you a tit, prick, fool, idiot or whatever word they feel fit to use because you ride a bike, which increases your chance of death, but thats your choice isn't it.doesn't make you an ignorant fool does it?

Ive spent all my life round loud machinery and now at 41 I have a constant ringing in my ears, Ive used chain saws since around the age of 14 (no central heating here ladies) and still pick one up with no ear defenders, along with disc cutters, motorcycles, rifles, shotguns, PA systems etc my life has always been around LOUD!

About 5 years ago I wore a pair of ear plugs on my superbike and have never looked back, you DO push harder as you simply can't hear the engine so much I found myself on the limiter thinking come on what's up with this thing....lol Now I have them all from foam plugs to top line moulded ear plugs but still choose the soft foam plugs I use when shooting, Arai don't help as quiet noisy. I don't think it spoils the ride at all if anything it makes you more like others say in the ZONE with sharper focus on the ride. Im gutted if I forget them now so keep foam packs all over the place, you can even get the res socks with little pockets in to stash some away..

Wearing good fitting earplugs doesn't make me as worn out or tired...

I have custom moulded from company called exinore. Lots of ear doctors can take the mould for the fit, also has different noise filters.

I had to go custom fit because my left ear channel is a lot smaller than my right... Regular plugs pop out and become a huge distraction...
