Mine is fine actually No clicking or clunking noise more than usual I do have the turbo like whine noise on acceleration thou but it's Lwsys had that . Is that cool thou ?
No primary drive noise on mine, after I saw how loud it is on that video someone posted up... But mine definitely has the supercharger whine when off the gas and slowing down in 1st and 2nd... Always at slow speed I notice it... Seems alot of us have that noise... Does that mean it is acceptable though??
Honestly I don't know. I would imagine once the potential issue had been recognised and a fix developed the modified parts would have been rolled out to factory production ASAP. It could turn out to be extremely expensive for Honda to allow this potential problem to continue. As soon as the engine swarf problems had been identified by Honda on the VFR1200. Honda collected every VFR to be returned to the factory for the inspection and modification if required.
mine sounds like its got a hell of a supercharger noisee on mine and when I pull the clutch in and out the sound deffo changes deffo burns oil and feels very sluggish bellow 7 k Thanks, Tom
I have a 2011 and it has a center punch mark on the clutch actuation lever so I assume that it has the updated parts ????? hopefully. It is as rattley as blazes at idle, only when its hot, and its only done 1000Kms, with the clutch in or out, far noisier than any other bike I have owned, and there have been a few. I was thinking that another potential rattle source could be the balance shaft drive gear backlash, which is adjustable. Can anyone comment on this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN8o9QtmLdc&feature=youtu.be
That doesn't sound healthy mate get it checked out or compare it against another at a dealer. One thing I have noticed is it is getting quieter as the miles are going up.Good luck
Ok I have fixed my rattly engine, it took about 5 minutes, and I am rapt. As I suspected, the culprit was incorrectly set backlash adjustment on the crankshaft balancer gears, obviously set incorrectly from the factory. This procedure is described on page 12-21 of the service manual. To reduce the backlash you rotate the shaft anti-clockwise, just a small amount. The eccentric balancer shaft is located on the lower LHS front of the crankcase, and is accessed by removing the belly pan. When doing this, you need to be careful not to overdo it and reduce the backlash too much, and load up the gears. I did it with the engine idling at normal operating temperature, and as you make the adjustment, you can clearly hear the change. When the rattling stops and the gears start hissing you have gone too far. I put a texta line on mine before I started so that I could easily return to the original position if I had too. If you look closely at the photo you can see the texta marks indicating how much I rotated the shaft, I reckon about 5-10 degrees, or about 2mm between the marks.
I'd be interested in another video to compare the sound now you've tweaked it. I thought mine sounded OK, and that the 1000 Km service would pick up anything if it wasn't normal. I've done 1700 Kms and it always sounded that way. Better get a service manual - where did you get yours?
Mine was sluggish low down mate. standard can / cat off . power commander on and pulls like a train now .. I have the supercharger whine as well
Pete its quite likely that yours is set up O.K. and isnt an issue. Mine was quite rattly at idle when it was hot, it sounded like a diesel tractor and the rattle was coming more from the left or middle of the front of the crankcase. I noticed in the manual that the balancer gear back lash was adjustable so I thought I would give it a try, and hey presto it worked. The Blackbird has a similar setup and its a known issue with them also. Maybe the guy on the production line was having a bad day, who knows? Its probably unlikely that they would be set up in the factory with the engine hot and running anyway, which is the best way. You can download the manual, I will PM you the link. Paul
Got around to adjusting the gear backlash and ended up with the adjustment set exactly as it was. I could hear the rattle you are talking about when the adjuster was turned, but mine wasn't making that noise before. Adjusted as per manual and ended up in the same position as it was. Hope yours is OK now and you are enjoying it!
Hey Pete that is really good news. It just proves to me that mine was set up wrong from the start, and that it was an exception to whats normal. I'm really happy with it mate, they are a great bike. Too bad the weather has gone crappy now though.
