It was the seat... You can see it clearly in slow motion. Also when he gets off the bike, you can see that the seat is gone.,
I thought the guy did pretty well really, he managed to stay on not only after being whacked by that bird but then clattering into the videographer and skimming through the gravel - fekkin hardcore
What he says at 10:22... absolutely true. In Portugal we have a saying that goes like this "O barato sai caro", that roughly translates to "The cheap turns out expensive", which perfectly applies to these situations.
