I just give them a good clean & apply a little oil to aid insertion & the next removal. Megs has it right imo. :)

was the site on the blink last night lol
I was only saying as I have seen people do some odd things
on bikes.I change my caliper bolts to titanium ones to save
    replacing them every time.

Think my comment was poorly written, there was no suggestion that greasing the spindle was to have any effect on the internal bearing race, but thanks anyway, being a trained/past mechanic I like to think I have some idea of how a bearing is constructed and operates. :D

What I find more interesting is the lack of grease inside a new sealed bearing :D

I could be wrong on this, but anyway in the dim and distant past I went on a bearing course at a place called the National Centre of Tribology and I'm sure it was said that the grease or oil in a sealed bearing was enough to keep it lubricated with no need to apply anymore.

True, and when spinning and hot it moves around with enough to coat the running surface and ball bearings, HOWEVER I'm nosey and pop the seal from a "cheap" bearing and most have zilch!

On some of the machines here in our yard we re grease them as part of servicing so seals are removed and grease applied they soon force out the excess! :)

Beat me to it Arthur. It pays to pay for a decent bearing.

Defo! I buy those cheap bearings like what's flooding on eBay for like £1.20 each!! Total CRAP!! Ok for a spinning Tig or spray table but that's about it!

Yeh I know it was for work honest. In my early days of electrical engineering I used to overhaul 3 phase induction motors, replacing and greasing the drive and non-drive end bearings. Those days are well gone now though.

Every six months it was my job to grease the bearings on my ex
Companies three main aerospace machines. ...such a job to get
To them but they were trialling cermic ones when I left.one down side
Is one small hit and the bearing breaks, not good when its a
    10k bill per change.

If I've ever taken my bike to have tyres fitted when I can't be arsed to take the wheels in loose, they always grease the spindle!

Besides any metal load bearing surface should be lubricated

My mobile tyre fitter always applies a light coating of grease to the spindles also.
