everybody knows the answer really dont you. its...... white boots fashion statement and life saver but i have to agree it is much more important that you see the other drivers, if you are aware of what could happen and ride sensible for that situation your chances of having an accident are greatly reduced
that is my moto, i treat every car at a junction/driveways etc etc as they are going to pull out on me, last friday it was a bit cold so i wore my textile jacket this is bright red and had 2 cars attempt to pull out, a yellow bib wont stop them. Why o why dont both headlights light up on the blade???
Exactly what my instructors used to say and has remained paramount when I ride......unfortunately with running lights now becoming the norm on cars bike lights are becoming diluted even more so and increased vigilance is name of the game......hwy lets be careful out there people
l know this is not the way but I have found that when you have high beam on in traffic THEY DO SEE YOU.I've not had anyone coming the other way flash me to say it blinds them.On motorways that high beam works wonders getting through traffic along with the odd idiot who does see you but won't pull over.Having had a few offs when in my teens my riding instructor told me to take my fingers off the brake lever whilst in training and on the test.Unfortunately in urban areas that habit is my way of being prepared and I still do it when junctions are coming up.
My finger (or sometimes two) is ALWAYS on the brake lever, unless I'm WOT accelerating (don't have a quick action throttle!). My foot is ALWAYS on the brake pedal, even although that means I can't ride the way that people think you should (balls of feet on pegs).
Please don't do this, it is f**king irritating. Whenever I get I bike coming up behind me with full beam on I end up dipping my rear view mirror. Now I can't see you at all ! Judging the speed of an on coming object is harder if it has a bright light in front of it and there is also the 'halo effect' which also makes it harder to see you in the first place particularly in the bright sunny conditions when most of us ride. Just because you are not getting flashed doesn't mean you are not blinding people they are probably trying to stay on the road with their eyes shut. It's not necessary, it's dangerous and illegal. If I had my way we'd still be able to switch off headlights. Trying to rely on lights or hi-vis to force other road users to see you is a mugs game. Take responsibility for your own safety and ride defensively. Deep breath, rant over. Sorry this is just something that winds me up.
Lights on is a waste of time, my normal transport is a Volvo V70 with head lights permanently on and people still pull out with out looking. If they can't be bothered to look out for a 2 tonne Swedish tank with lights on we ain't got a hope on our bikes.
