Were you able to get a refund on the flights & hotel?
Guy on TV the other week was saying since the FCO was not advising against travel then the insurance companies were turning people down for refunds...insurance companies really are scummy bastards.

I managed to cancel the Hotel in Doha free of charge.
The flight cancellation on Qatar Airways cost £130 - that is they refund you the ticket price less £130
One night Premier Inn £54 (one night cancelled for free and one paid)
One of the flights from the Channel Islands cancelled for free but not the return £55

So about £240 lost out of a possible £900 expenditure. Could be worse.

This hysteria is uncalled for. It is a flu-like virus. It kills the very old and very young, people without proper immune systems. More flu deaths than Coronavirus deaths.

However, if I am wrong, we will be discussing it from caves as we wait for the next band of raiders to attack.

I, personally, cannot wait for that eventuality.

Yeah not great if you get it, and even worse if you're old or have a pre-existing condition. I think there's a balance between the media reporting from an "informing the population" perspective, and just creating hysteria from the 24/7 coverage.

Absolutely gutted that the Moto GP season is now 2 races down. I'm going to have no excuse not to do that DIY I've been promising this weekend now (unless I'm ill of course).

Trouble with thay chart is that Spanish flu killed millions of people just after WW1, so a case of lies, damn lies and statistics.

30 million which is still only 1.7% so it's correct....so get back to counting screws in your man shed...

So Corona virus with approximately the same mortality rate, but a higher chance of spreading than Spanish flu, which killed 30 million people should be ignored because?

A disease which infects 1 billion with a 1% mortality rate will still kill 100 million people, whilst a more "sexy/exotic" disease such as Ebola may have a 40% mortality rate but won't kill as many because it doesn't spread so easily.

If Spanish flu struck today with the same stats as it did in 1918 it would kill about 120 million as the global population has increased almost 4 fold. Puts a slightly different light on it when you consider that the 11th most populous country has a population of 126 million.

Perhaps this should have its own thread - but looking into it is very interesting ......

    • Coronavirus - get their name from their round shape with spiky proteins that make them look like a crown or the corona of the Sun
    • COVID- 19 - means Coronavirus Disease 2019 (year)
    Spanish Flu
    • The Spanish flu - they didn't even know what it was - viruses as a pathogen were not discovered until 1933 (by British Scientists)
    • They did not have antibiotics to treat the secondary infections of the lungs caused by bacteria - which caused a lot of the deaths
    • They had no idea what to do to treat people, to stop it spreading or even what was the cause - there were some strange theories.

    Now:
    • We have electron microscope images and we understand coronaviruses as a pathogen
    • Within two weeks of the first cases they identified the coronavirus - and sequenced its genome
    • Details of it, including its genome was shared globally - what it was and knowledge was available on how to prevent the spread of coronaviruses
    • We have antibiotics to stop the secondary infection of the lungs by bacteria - saving many lives
    • We have anitvirul medicines, not perfect, but still useful in the fight against such diseases
    • We understand the importance of isolating infected patients from everyone else

For these reasons, even if the infection rate is the same we will not see the death rate like it was in 1918 - the world of knowledge and medicine has moved on hugely since then.

We will be racing motorbikes again in no time !

The ticketing people at Bookmoto have said that they will issue me with a gift voucher - for the full value of the Qatar GP ticket - that can be used for future ticket purchases.

That seems fair enough, as the cancellation of the racing wasn't their fault.

The cancellation of the first two races plays into Marc Marquez hands. He’s just had a shoulder operation and needs recovery time.

Can’t wait to see if his brother beats him. Be fascinating to see his response, although unlikely.

Wicked news. He’s been living it up like a rockstar recently whilst the other Moto GP boys are prepping for the 2020 season.

    What a legend!
