The debate of, to photoshop or not to photoshop is very long and a bit pointless really. I used to say no photoshop until I spoke to one of our local professional photographers, he said the image you see when you take the picture is not always the image you see when you get the image downloaded. I have looked into is and he is quite right. Especially with sunsets. So I now don't mind photoshopping ( now a verb) as long as it is only used to get the image back to what you actually saw. Spock out.
Perused over those fabulous photos for over an hour while eating my lunch. What got me was how clear they were.Superb!
We were pondering over that here too, Jez. We think, from their age, that they were originally shot on glass plate, so the negatives were most likely, 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" or 5 1/2" x 4 1/2". Most prints from them would have been contact prints. Made by just laying the plate on top of the photographic paper and exposing it to light. This give an extremely precise transfer of detail, with very little grain in evidence, but is only, really, viable with very large negs. Chances are the images on the web site were scanned from one of these contact prints, or, if the scanner was very lucky, the original glass plate. That being said, I hate getting them in to scan. They're dangerous, fragile and more often than not damage the scanner platen. Making a print from smaller, more modern, negatives will always diffuse and soften an image because you're making it larger and spreading the data over a larger than intended area. With these monsters, it just doesn't happen.
Absolutely stunning pics and great quality. Was one of them really dated 1865? I shall be looking at these several more times. So much to take on each shot. Thanks for sharing them.
Incredible quality photo's, hats off to who ever remastered them Almost looks like somebody went back in time with some modern technology and recaptured the moment

Restoring some old photographs for a local scout group and whilst cleaning one from 1956 discovered none other than Harry Potter, lurking in the background! Or perhaps you muggles can't see him...
Took first action shots with my camera today. Wife nipped out on my bike so decided to try and catch her when she came back, while hiding behind the car. No fancy settings or anything.
Good start mate try using the sport setting on the dial at the top of the camera will freeze the subject better until you get to grips with the settings think it looks like a stick man running or something like that
