The week before last, South West Water announced official drought conditions. Just drove by what looks like a river running out of their HQ car park of rain overflow.

Of course, the official line is that the rain is falling into the wrong places, which must rank up there with the "leaves on the track" excuse.

My brother, a canal operative with Exeter City Council was telling me yesterday of a geezer in the north west who, some years ago put forward a plan for turning the canals of England into an open pipe work system for transferring water, a la national grid. Apparently at about a third the price of building a nationwide pipe system.

At the moment they could just put a siphon pump in my garden.

I read some time back that a lot of the problem was down to all the new development over the last 20 years they have tarmaced so much of the south and covered areas in new buildings with massively improved drainage lots of water just runs back to rivers and the sea, the water companies have done little IMO to build new methods of storing water and fixing leaks etc they are the ones to blame, oh that and there are a few more million homes to feed... I have a number of water butts that are all over flowing right now... it's been wazzing down here all day... water shortage my ass.

This is true. You have to get planning permission to concrete or Tarmac any decent sized piece of ground here now to try and control the run off. A lot of pikeys are out of business down here now with pick ups full of congealed asphalt.
