Hi mate, i am just back on an RR5 as well.

I did put Gilles rear sets on which makes an amazing difference. Also, the back ache might be the rear shock settings? I noticed on mine that it needed more rebound damping to avoid those solid 'feels like a plank' potholes!! i also softened compression.....

Apart from that i will be planning a european jaunt, and expect very little discomfort at all. (i am 6 2" and 13 stone, apprx !!!)

    Good luck mate.

Hmmm, rear shock setting, good thought as it is a bit harsh throgh town.
Should I look for somewhere specific to set it up for the road?

    HI mate

Darren at MCT is very good i hear, and his business is in Suffolk. I am sure others will recommend others nearer you if you place a thread asking for advice.

Let me know how you get on, as its on my to do list also!

If all that does not work then try looking out for some Gilles Variobars or Heli Bars, nice items, but can be expensive to buy new, try and find some used, as with most things in life, its worth taking a bit of time to get it right for the next few years, i will be doing the same over a period of time with my new (to me) 954 Blade, i have already fitted a used Ohilins rear shock and this has made a world of difference to the ride quality, i also got it professionally set up for me, i am short to the rear sets will not be necessary !!! But fitted Pazzo short levers for the correct position and reach, small but quality changes/kit is the answer, just don't try and do everything at once.
