I have a Garmin 390 - it's great. Bluetooth, free route planning software, fitted with the above stem mount. Also comes with car fitting kit too so I use in the car as well. Can't recommend it enough, got it from Halfords on offer at £250 then used my 10% discount from Bennetts for bike stuff. Sorted. As Jimbo says though, take maps, good maps. Sat navs can go wrong but a map won't. Would defo recommend an intercom too. You can hear directions from sat nav rather than looking and also talk to your mates! No more pointing to the tank when you need fuel! We got an Interphone F5MC, great piece of kit. Enjoy!
worked as testdriver lot of year in italy for brembo ; know really well the area let me know what U wanna do bt intercom is sure a must , pretty happy with scala rider (still have a unit on all mine 14 lids)
Well we're riding from Calais to Mugello and have 3 days of riding there and 3 and a bit on the way back. Was thinking of getting across France quickly then down through Black Forest. Also some routes in the Alps we fancy but not sure on distances, timing and stopover locations. Any advice welcomed!
I will be going to Mugello as well ! If the weather forecast is good, then will take the scenic route via the Voges, Black Forest, Schaffhausen, then the Julierpass & Malojapass to Como in Italy. If the weather forecast is bad then will avoid it and do the simple route all the way down through France to Lyon. I have a bit longer than you, but personally those are the options really - scenic route if the weather is good - or - head straight to the South of France and cross into Italy somewhere south of Lyon. Never been as far South in Italy as Mugello before, so that will be new ! (MotoGP ticket booked !) Should be good.
Nice one! Yep getting our tickets soon now they've been released. Where are you watching from at the track?
I have booked "Centrale Bronze" - at £139 (plus postage), for the Friday-Sunday. Contacted a campsite near the circuit and they say no booking required, so fingers crossed on that !
Firstly, I had great advise from the guys from here, so listen to them for sure. My advise I followed was. You have to stay at the circuit !!!!!! nothing worse than leaving it at the end of the day and it's getting mental. Showers are great too. There is no camping area as such, camp where you like, and they do, everyone is nice n friendly and mad, it makes me smile writing this 2yrs later... Also as I think Kentblade or Jimbo Vills said, drive down through Germany, we left Kent to Ghent as short ride as we never left til afternoon. Stayed in the Carlton Hotel, has Secure Garage/car park and family owned, 2 Brothers, car and bike lovers. Stayed there twice and once waited til gone 11pm as caught up in bad weather. Then back roads to Nurburgring, great ride and roads perfect, on to Baden Baden, where we stayed again, great area to eat out, nice hotel with car park too. Next morning down the B500, amazing road and to Andermatt in Switzerland. Next morning down to Mugello !! The only motorway was used was the last leg of Italy as time was getting on, it was a trip of a life time, great friends, B roads, weather, food and then Mugello!!!! When you have so many memories, I get excited at even the word. !!! Enjoy, you Have To Stay. Highlights. When you ask the steward at the gate " where camping" he says "anywhere" I ask " ??? Anywhere apart from Track?" He says " yes anywhere apart from track" he wasn't lying !!! You would get chucked out of any uk circuit as they camp Anywhere !!!! Mental !!! When walking along you met people with ,,,,,, a chainsaw engine in a guitar, with 46 on it,,,, people randomly walking along with chainsaws revving with no chain cut down,,,, the was 8 in the beer tent alone,,,, Out of the darkness there was a guy pushing a petrol air raid siren blaring with 46 sprayed on it, he had ear defenders on !!! Campers pouring in, one guy had a shopping trolley with a KTM 125 Mx engine on it, not to power it, just to rev up n make noise, they do love to rev !!!!! Fu*king Mental. Yes, I know I'm rambling but I'm excited !!!! People around me opening presents and I'm dreaming, back in Mugello land Merry Christmas all .
Love it! Can't wait! Ideally we'd have a couple of extra days for getting there and back so will have to hit a couple of motorways enroute but have the good roads planned too. Campsite booked and tickets next!
I'm booked in to a place about 20 miles away (too old for the racket all night at the circuit, it was bad enough during the racing last time I was there). Looking at google maps it says I'm 23 miles from the circuit but takes 1 hour and 8 minutes to get there down the squiggliest road I've ever seen. Should be a fun ride in and out.
If you don't stay overnight at Mugello I would say it's almost not worth going to. You will miss so much. When I rode I took a week each way but understand not everyone can get so much time off. Other times have been fly in and hire car. Gary - have you the link to the Groupon deal please. That is a good deal.
Over the years I've done many weekends at race circuits, both racing myself and spectating at MotoGP, wsbk, world endurance ( bikes and cars ) as well as bsb and in my younger days at drag racing. If I was jumping on a plane afterwards I would possibly stay at the circuit for the craic but I'll be jumping on a Tuono v4r and doing over a thousand miles and the last thing I need before that is a sleepless weekend.
We got a hotel for the Sunday night not far from the circuit. I'll try and do a video montage of this year at the circuit to give an idea - its totally unique.
It is funny, but after 2 days your brain gets used to the chain saws, explosions, fireworks and huge sound systems playing Italian house music all night and you actually get some sleep
I like to go out, but to be able to walk away from it all. Not keen on that waking up in a tent that is already 40'C inside at 10.00 am, with a raging hangover - a mouth that tastes like .... Talking of Drag Racing went to Santa Pod to watch the championships a couple of years back. Top Fuel Dragsters - the tech specs make F1 cars look like Go-Karts !. Loved it. A big part of these trips is riding the bike there and back, and riding around whilst there. I want to see the racing and the show, but riding my own bike is a big part of the whole thing.
