Hmmmmmm He fucked his (new at the time) R1 off after a summer of top-ups in 1998 (With Yamaha insisting a 1litre every 1000miles was acceptable)...funny enough I had a Yamaha TRX850 at the time and that was the same too (1litre every 1k)....I lasted a little longer before I got fed up with having to top it up every five mins. He's not going to accept anything like that again, I'd told him it was limited to "some" 08s..Soooo he's currently looking at 2010 FireBlades. Cheers chaps, I will keep you posted.
Ditto, i have a 954 and its not used a drop, this problem is why my first blade has been a 954, i just did not want to play the russian roulette game when it came to buying one. I don't use my bike just for a bit of summer fun, i use it to commute to work on so excess oil use would have been a real issue for me. I will keep the 954 for a while yet and see if Honda reconsiders if there is an issue with this current model. I think its down to each one of us to assess the risks and make a decision, but if you do get a '' burner '' then expect a fight with Honda to have it sorted. Its a little annoying really as if this is not sorted out then i will then have to consider another manufactures offerings, which i don't really want to do. Good luck with your decision.
Ditto...my RRY has NEVER budged from the MAX line between services in the 10+ years we have been together. Good old girl. BTW Hudson: It is NOT my decision......I am asking on behalf of a friend, he was looking at newer GSXR1000s until I butted-in and suggested he looked at FireBlades too (as you can see from the opening post I was under the impression it was ONLY 2008 bikes that were affected). He had oil consumption issues with his 1998 R1, He won't accept anything he has to top-up every five mins.
I've put a 1000 miles on my 2010 & so far no oil burn. I think it also depends on how hard you ride it, if you do track days quite often you would probably need to top it up.
No oil usage on my 2009, with 12,000 miles on the clock... I have only had it from 10,000 miles though... I've not really ridden it in anger though...
My 2010 needs fractional top ups between services, but it certainly wouldn't die without any, I'm just a stickler for it that's all. Possibly a lot of aspects come into play, how hard it's ridden, how it was run in, do you always let it warm up properly etc
Mines 05 Boro boy doesn't seem to use significant amount of oil between changes either, it's all these flash harry new bikes
Thanks all. I Have Emailed him a link to both threads (This one here and the one I started on other FireBlade forum)
Mines an 04, and has used oil since it was new, its got 60k on it now and still uses about a litre inbetween 4k services. Just got a new 12 model, so am keen to see how that does.
Just got a text from him, He read the lot last night and he's just done the deal on a newer GSXR1000. cheers all
My 2011 uses over a ltr per 1000 miles never been on the track and run in to the book. My k6 1000 never used a drop why won't Honda admit its a major problem and stop hiding behind the government standard of 1ltr every 600 miles is acceptable cnuts!
Because they simply don't understand when the game is up.... like Bill Clinton when he made his epic statement about not having any sexual relations with that woman !!! Only for her to pull out (no pun intended) a ' soiled ' dress for forensic testing..... like all good decent girls do ! I too wish Honda would sort this out, i would love to buy the new shape blade but fear i will buy another manufactures offering when it comes time. So sad.
Yep so I have an oil burner I must use somewhere near a litre per 1k miles or so! I've had her since 700 miles she's now done 3k and I have put in over a litre easy already.... She does get stretched out every ride but that still shouldn't mean drinking that much oil! Not sure what happens on the 4k service but maybe that will help reduce the oil consumption as I had planned to keep her for a while.....
Duno about your 'Book' Tim but mine does not give any running in detail bar saying it's for a 300 mile period. Doesn't give you any details about Rev limits etc or %age throttle loadings etc Thraping it from new like the Mags and Journos do on new bike tests is a far safer bet than glazing up the bores by pussy footing about too much. In any case the manufacturer has already power tested the engine at max rpm at the factory so you're not exactly showing it something new!
