The ironic thing is my firm are industry leaders in h&s. protect the guys on site like you wouldn't believe. There hr and occupational health for us lot is shite though. Want there pound of flesh - but pay for it I guess...
No honestly guys I do work..................................................... 8 hours a week, that's all.
The bottom line is simple, right or wrong, you can have every bit of paper legislation in the world, but if you don't do it, then its next man up syndrome and someone will bite their hand off and you are looking for new job, its the way its always been and always will be, keeps everyone competitive and employers happy. The good thing is I have lived over half my years now, so I can see a end to all this crap, not sure when but it won't be as long as i have been doing it, thats for sure.
That's the daft thing - bet you have a risk manager / H&S stuff etc. but you folk are missed out. We were the same, some of the most experienced / qualified risk management engineers etc. in the business but till recently had no policy on this
Honestly mate, you wouldn't believe the amount of resource, money, time and importance my firm put into Heath and Safety... Funny ey.
Our H&S specialist has MIOPS and we made him a 3day a week contractor from full time employee so I guess he can write all the rules and regs but isn't responsible for enforcing them.... box ticking
H&S can save the firm money in staff injury claims as well as claims from customers, suppliers and contractors.I know its a ball ache to cover but its there for your safety and welfare. Shame we cannot have a tacho to MAKE us rest when we should do.It might save a few lives too.
Not complaining fella, I spend my life trying to make money for my company, sometimes not doing the most moral of things, but I'd never begrudge a penny spent on h&s. not about claims, it's about the injury in the first place. Quite proud of my firms acheivements and standards, my sector turns over £150m a year and we have just passed three years without a riddor incident. That really is something considering the amount of work we've done. End of the day, that means all them dudes have helped us make money but gone home to their families safe each day. Can't put a price on that.... I cringe when I walk past other jobs from quite large firms, it's night and day compared to what a few of us are doing tbh. Although I do hate the cover your arse paperwork these days, that is a waste of resource just to cover you legally! But needs must hey.
3 years for construction doing the projects you do without a riddor is mighty impressive - and as you say the lads going home safe is the best part of it We work with our large customers on this stuff, but then its us who pays up should it go wrong
Off course I do, that' why I only work short hours. 30 years in the same firm mate, sit back and now employ other people to do my work!!!
Would be interested in what is normal for driving to work Not Trucks ...Today my son Michael jnr has drove 4.5 hours to Scotland done a few hours snagging works and drove back .I told him to stock up with red bull .
Thanks mate. We did celebrate well.... Few injured heads the next day Not sure i agree with you on the second comment though, insurance companies are like casinos - house always win
I could get really nerdy and get flamed for all this, but occupational driving as your son did today is not subject to the same controls as commercial vehicles like Jason's limo driving and RichC's truck driving. If you are really interested there is some good ROSPA guidance leaflets he should look over. Main message being 'if you feel yourself falling asleep, stop, get some sleep, have a coffee and continue' - even use a hotel for a few hours if needed. It would be his manager / company director who could be called by the coroner if he caused a death through fatigue etc.
Cheers Al .Very unhappy myself with this but its the same old tale " get it done " or we will get someone else to do it .
