Hi Guy's I ain't usin Castrol again it make gear change notchy and the bike vibey I think it is pants so back to silkolene pro 4 for me The only reason Honda recommend Castrol is due to their sponsorship not due to quality! I've found Silkolene much better for my bike and there is a new 10w30 Pro 4 energy which sounds amazing so I'll put some in when the Spring arrives
Well i decided to do an oil change this week and Elaine kindly said she would nip into Halfords for me and with this in mind a removed the front label off the front of the old oil container so there would be no issues when i got home ...Well she give it to the trained gibbon who returned with the oil this was paid for and that was that ...Except the packaging looks near exact but she has returned with Castrol Power 1 10-30 which appears to be semi synthetic although there is no metion of it , and the label i give her clearly shows Castrol Power 1 racing 10-30 which does say Fully synthetic ,its no big deal to take it back and the gibbon even commented on how organized she was (prick) But is there really that much difference??
I use cheap as chips 10.00 for 4 litres of Hein Gerrik stuff - think its done about 8k since that went in All these frequent oil changes are over rated - just ride the thing, keep it topped up and change oil and filter after about 7,500 - 10,000 miles
sounds like solid advice to be honest, I used to change the oil once a year on all weather 97 blade, never had any problems and the internals looked brilliant when I got to see them. sold the old girl with 74000 miles on her and no engine problems. hope my 2012 bike lasts as long!
I'm a bit paranoid about oil and change it every year. Whether it's used it all or not... There is something satisfying about draining the oil and it not looking much different to when it went in.
Good call Ken its about doing your best to protect your prized machine .To me £40.00 is not the end of the world and like you say its quite satisfying .
I have my spring oil when my bike comes out of hiding, also do all fluids on the bike no matter what how much it has been used.
I totally concur. In the old days we used to say film is the cheapest bit of your kit so waste it. I always look at the petrol we burn without a backward glance so a premium oil is a no brainer for me.
I agree, changed the oil & filter in my rr5 when I bought it, did a track day at Mallory covering 102 miles and changed the oil & filter again. It came out black! Well worth changing so soon.
in 2012, oil and filter change in Jan. RAF Valley track day in April 1,500 mile trip to Applescross and back late April 3,000 mile trip Monaco early June Did a trackday 4 days later with it looking like a tractor at Snetterton Wales ride outs, another blat to Scotland so add 1,500 miles to that Tried to undo oil filter (failed) so just dropped oil beore 3,000 mile trip to Pyrenees and must have done about 3k since then if not more - its still got the same filter on it from 12+ months ago but is about to be changed after track day at Oulton mid Feb.
Just a thought about what your oil is actually doing. At 12,000 rpm the crankshaft is going round 200 times per second. The cam shaft is going round at 100 times per second. Each valve is opening and closing 50 times per second. The oil is lubricating, cooling and cleaning during all this time, no matter if the engine is cold or hot. Do you really want contaminated, dirty and degraded old oil doing this job inside your pride and joy? Is it worth scrimping? Only a thought.....
[/IMG][/IMG][/IMG][/IMG][/IMG][/IMG][/IMG] Just had another sesh in the garage this time the promised oil change and whilst not as technical as some threads on here ,for me its quite interesting .First job was to protect the carpet from oil so i have some throw-away green plastic sheets then carefully undo the sump nut a little ,next position the old oil container under the sump and somehow twiddle the nut until the oil pisses out ''by-passing the container'' and most ending up on the green sheet lesson no 1! Undid a couple of fairing bolts and managed to get the filter off but not before adding more oil all over the fairings.Replaced the filter adding a lick of oil around the rubber seal and also replaced the sump washer to the sump bolt and tightened up .Using the blue boss wipes i cleaned all the oil from within the fairing and scooped up the green sheet for disposal within next doors bin.Poured in 3 lts of the lovely red coloured dinosaur nectar and then spent 10 minutes Steve Hawkins style trying to clip the fairings in ! Remove don't start label and give it a couple of false starts and then run it for a minute re-checked with the stick and it needed 200 ml to top up which is only midway between the marks so beware as i have a measuring jug and put exactly 3 lts in as per the book.Cleaned up and celebrated with a bacon butty.
I have the Snapon version of this, virtually identical though Mike. Dead handy for loads of drain and drippy jobs. Samoa 14 Litre Oil Drain Pan - Machine Mart
