Mostly into the pockets of a select few The industrialised areas of the UK (mostly Northern) made this country rich and powerful but once they were no longer competitive the softy southerners who owned the companies shut up shop and disappeared back down South with the profits and left the towns and cities to rot. And not to sound like Che Guevara here but if you want a country to function properly and harmoniously then you have to take care of the poor. There just aren't enough jobs to go around so there always have to be those in work and those without.
